The Secret to Real Independence

G’day Beautiful People!

“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

Here’s the thing about self-reliance – it’s a bit of a myth, isn’t it?

Every single one of us ended up here because we got absolutely fed up (literally!) with depending on faceless institutions that care more about their bottom line than our wellbeing and governments that have their own agenda and not our best interests at heart. Take one step off the beaten path, ask a few simple questions, and suddenly you realise something’s not quite right with the whole system.

So naturally, we’ve all seen the writing on the wall and started preparing the best we knew and tried our hand at going it alone. Tom and Paula started a backyard farm and then moved onto acres. Louie and I are in a glorified caravan on an acre and are finding growing veggies is not as easy as it’s cracked up to be. All in the name of ‘independence’, right?

But here’s what I’ve learned – true self-reliance doesn’t actually exist.

Tom and Paula’s place? It would have been pretty tough without sons and their mates lending a hand. Our seven years living semi off-grid in that trusty caravan? Wouldn’t have been possible without good friends and family who had our back when things got tough.

Community is the secret sauce to real independence.

You can stock your pantry with a year’s worth of wheat, dig your veggie patch, and invest in all the right tools, but there comes a time when you realise a truly resilient life is bigger than what you can achieve solo. It’s about having people around you, ready to lend a hand when things hit a snag or when you’re facing a challenge too big for one pair of hands or mind.

Real independence isn’t just about resources or know-how—it’s powered by connection. When unexpected setbacks pop up, it’s friends who step in, neighbours who share what they’ve grown, and fellow members exchanging ideas that make the difference. Working together, you realise problems are shared and the load is lighter. Even your biggest ambitions—starting a new project or growing an impossible crop—become achievable when backed by community.

And community is more than practical help; it’s the chance to share views and values about the world we’re all navigating. Conversations aren’t just about what’s for dinner—they’re about deeper ideas: living on your own terms, carving out freedom, and questioning the systems that want more control over our lives. There’s something powerful about connecting with people who get it; who aren’t just swapping gardening tips but also talking about the bigger picture, challenging each other to think, and refusing to settle for a life dictated by someone else’s rules.

That’s the Communities of Light spirit. We encourage pooling resources, supporting each other, and swapping not only skills but also those honest, sometimes challenging perspectives and how to move forward without copping out or giving in.

Whether you’re just starting out or have lived off-grid for years, it’s community—the people beside you, and the conversations you share—that transforms independence from a lonely pursuit into a thriving, purpose-filled way of life with people you trust.

So, resist the myth of going it alone. Join in and discover how much stronger, wiser, and more free you feel when you’re surrounded by people who care. That’s real independence, it’s called inter-dependence, and it lasts.

Here’s to our Forever Freedom
